Caged competition

- CONQUERING A SPACE -

Much like in the original role of chess, once a piece moves onto an already occupied space of the opposing team, this would normally count as an automatic "Capture" . The space would then be over taken by said piece moving forward.

However, this is not your average game of chess. During the pursuit of a "Capture" a grappling match will happen anytime two competitors from opposing teams come in contact upon the same space.

The declared winner of each grappling match will continue the game of chess and take over the space on the board, while the defeated player will be removed from the game.

- WINNING THE MATCH -

Grappling matches can be won quickly by a Submission or go the distance by controlling their opponent with a strong position such as a pin.

If a match goes the distance then the declared winner will be chosen by the Judges.

The Decision of the Judges are based upon Positional Dominance over the length of each match.

Rules & REgulations

CHESS BOARD

  • 4 x 12 Mat Area
  • 1 - Bonus Space Per Team

GRAPPLING AREA

  • 24 ft. Steel Octagon Cage

GRAPPLING COMPETITORS

  • 8 - Pawns

                      > Black Team

  • 8 - Pawns

                      > White Team

INSTRUCTOR

  • 1 - Instructor :  Responsible for guiding players throughout the board of an organized Chess Game. (Does not grapple.)

COACHING  ( Optional )

  • 1 - Coach :  Coaches alongside the cage during each grappling bout.

- Chess Game -

Following the simple rules of chess, each team will have 8 players that will become pieces upon the board and one Instructor per team.

Instructors will be guiding their players strategically throughout the chess game.

During each turn, the Instructors will have up to 1 minute to make a move, failure to do so will result in a forfeited turn.

All players on the board must be experienced in some form of Grappling, Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, etc. No matter what beginner stage or high level Grappling experience, all are welcome to compete.

- Capturing A Piece :

Once two players from opposing teams come in contact with one another while occupying the same space, traditionally this would normally count as a "Capture" with the player advancing forward overtaking the opponent's piece.

However new rules indicate that when landing on an opponent's space will result in a 2 minute grappling match with the declared winner overtaking the space and removing their opponent's piece from the game.

- Grappling -

During the pursuit of a "Capture" a grappling match will happen anytime two competitors from opposing teams come in contact upon the same space.

Grappling matches will be a one 2 minute round inside a 24 ft. octagon cage.

The declared winner of each grappling match will continue the game of chess and take over the space on the board while the defeated player will be removed from the game.

- Winning A Match :

Grappling matches can be won quickly by a Submission or go the distance by controlling their opponent with a strong position such as a pin. If a match goes the distance then the declared winner will be chosen by the Judges.

- Judges Decision :

Any grappling match left to the judges decision will be judged based upon positional dominance over the length of each match. No extra points will be scored for sweeps, escapes, submission attempts etc. It is only strictly having to do with the duration of keeping a dominant position and controlling your opponent.

- Positional Dominance :

Any position in relation to a Pin would be considered a dominant position.

Other dominant positions would include :

  • Full Mount
  • Back or Rear Mount
  • Side Control
  • Kesa or ¨Scarf Hold¨
  • North/South
  • Reverse Kesa or ¨Reverse Scarf Hold¨
  • Knee Ride or ¨Knee On Belly¨
  • Side Ride
  • S-Mount

- Guard Position :

The Guard position, open or closed guard will not count as a dominant position.

Instead it will be considered a stalemate, if left going to the judges decision it could ultimately result in a draw.

- Draw :

Any grappling match resulting in a Draw, no points will be awarded.

Prior to the Grappling match, the team that was originally advancing forward towards the space will take the square and capture their opponents piece.

Bonus Spaces :

Each Bonus Space is colored according to each team and can only be used one time during the whole duration of the game.

During your turn, this Bonus can be chosen to be used at any given time but can only be activated while a player of the team is standing on it.

Using the Bonus will allow your team to bring back an already defeated player, placing them at any of the 8 beginning spaces that you choose.

If any of the 8 beginning spaces on your side of the board are already occupied by the opposing team, the player coming back may be placed upon that opponent's piece as a "Capture", resulting in a quick match.

Points :

  • Bonus Space - ( 2 points )
  • Overtaking A Space - Overtaking a space is done by winning a grappling match. - ( 1 point )
  • There will be no points awarded if a Grappling Match ends in a Draw.
  • Points are only a factor when the end of a Chess Game ends in a Draw where there are no more legal moves to be made.

Chess Game Draw :

If there are no legal moves left to be made regardless of how many players are left on the board, this will result in a Draw.

If the Chess Game ends in a Draw there will be one final grappling match that will give the team a fighting chance to redeem themselves regardless of points.

Final Grappling Match :

A final grappling match is considered the final match in the case of a Chess Game Draw.

Both teams will choose one of their players that are still remaining on the board to compete in a final 2 minute grappling match, the declared winner wins the game for their team.

In the case that the final match results in another Draw, points will be the deciding factor of which team wins.

Ways To Win :

  • Clear the board of all your opponents pieces, win by the last team standing.

  • If there are no legal moves left to be made regardless of how many players are left on the board, a final grappling match will happen. Both teams will choose one player between any of the players that are still remaining on the board to compete. The declared winner wins the game for their team but in the case of a final Draw, points will be the deciding factor of which teams win.
